Tips to Get Through a Dental Emergency
No matter what your dental emergency, you can be prepared to make your way safely to the Smiles by Arnold & Associates by remembering just a few first aid tips. Some of the most common dental emergencies and first aid treatments are:
- Avulsed (knocked out) tooth – A knocked out tooth is one of the most time sensitive dental injuries, and you should call our office immediately to increase the odds of preserving your natural tooth. Carefully search for the avulsed tooth. Hold the tooth gently, by the biting surface. Avoiding touching the roots. Rinse the tooth and mouth with warm water to cleanse any foreign matter or blood. If possible, replace the tooth in the vacated socket. If this is not possible, store in whole milk to keep moist until arriving at our office. Bite down on cold, damp gauze to slow or stop bleeding.
- Soft-tissue laceration – Because there are more densely packed capillaries near the skin’s surface on your face and neck, even minor cuts and scrapes may bleed heavily. Before seeking emergency care, try to slow or stop the bleeding and thoroughly examine the wound. Using a cold, damp piece of sterile gauze or clean cloth, apply gentle pressure to the affected area. If the bleeding continues after ten to fifteen minutes of pressure, hold a piece of cloth wrapped ice to the cut. If you are still unable to slow or stop the bleeding, call our office or proceed to your nearest emergency room for treatment.
- Damaged temporary or permanent crowns – Damaging crowns typically happens in one of three ways: fall out, loosen, or crack/break. If you whole dental crown falls out, try to temporarily reattach it using toothpaste or denture adhesive, and make a restoration appointment. If your crown feels loose, try not to chew near the tooth and call to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. If your crown cracks or breaks off, try to retain any broken pieces. If the remaining tooth is sharp, use dental putty (typically used to protect soft tissue from braces) to protect your cheek, gums, and other teeth from damage. Call to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
