Dr. James H. Arnold |
Dr. Arnold grew up right here in Porter County,
where he attended Valparaiso High School. After graduating near the top
of his class with a 4.1 GPA, and All-State and All-American distinction
in track and cross-country, Dr. Arnold went to Indiana University. He
completed his bachelor of science in biology and obtained a minor in
Spanish, while competing on Indiana’s track and cross-country teams.
Upon graduation, Dr. Arnold moved on to the Indiana University School
of Dentistry in Indianapolis. He was elected class president four years
in a row, and represented his school at several national meetings. In
addition to achieving excellent grades, Dr. Arnold received the ASDA
Award of Excellence and the IDA Award for Leadership.

In 1996, he returned to Chesterton
to work with Dr. Norman R. Novak. After three years of working
together, Dr. Arnold bought the dental practice in 1999, and Dr.
Novak retired in 2000. Since buying the practice, Dr. Arnold and
his outstanding team have worked hard to make Smiles By Arnold & Associates
the best that it can be. This includes a tremendous amount
of continuing educationat
the some of the best post-graduate dental institutions in the world. |
These include the Pacific
Aesthetic Continuum in San Francisco, the Las
Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, the Esthetic
Epitome in Charlotte, the Hornbrook
Group in Los Angeles and Houston, the Kois Center in Seattle, the Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne and the Dawson
Center for Advanced Dental Study in St. Petersburg. Additionally,
Dr. Arnold has received advanced training in laser dentistry at the World
Clinical Laser Institute.
Dr. Arnold is an active member of numerous local, national and international
dental groups. These include the American
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Crown Council, the Academy
of General Dentistry, the American
Dental Association, the Pierre
Fauchard Academy (fellow) and the Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics.
Dr. Arnold is also one of the founders of the World Institute for Dental Education, a group that has traveled to India twice to teach advanced dental techniques. The group has invitations to lecture and teach in several other countries, as well. In 2008, Dr. Arnold also helped start MAX – Mastering the Aesthetic Xtreme. MAX is committed to helping train dentists to perform aesthetic procedures at a much higher level and to attain greater happiness in dentistry. MAX puts on many seminars each year in pursuit of helping dentists to achieve excellence.
Locally, Dr. Arnold has served as an officer for the Porter County Dental
Society and on the Northwest Indiana Dental Society Board of Directors
since 1999. He served as the Chairman of Northwest Indiana’s Dental
Peer Review Committee for three years, and he has served on the board
of the Northwest Indiana Dental Foundation since 2005. Dr. Arnold has
also participated on several committees for the Indiana Dental Association including
the state’s Strategic Planning Committee and the Council on New
Dentists. He has volunteered at Hilltop Neighborhood House, a free dental
clinic for low-income families.
Dr. Arnold is
also becoming very well known on the national dental scene. In 2003 he
was honored to be named as a Fellow
in the Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics (F.A.C.E.). He
had to pass a rigorous written examination covering all areas related
to comprehensive esthetic dentistry, submit several cases showing his
skills in treatment planning, cosmetic dentistry, and full mouth rehabilitation,
and successfully present a challenging case to the Board. In
2006, he was invited to serve on the Advisory Board for the Academy
of Comprehensive Esthetics (ACE). Since then, he has also served
as the Co-Chairman of the Fellowship Committee for ACE.
In 2004, Dr. Arnold was also selected as a medical expert in the field of
cosmetic dentistry for the Medical
News Now, Inc (MDTV). He was honored to be interviewed for a
thirty minute television program on cosmetic dentistry produced early this
year in New York City. That same year, Dr. Arnold began serving as
a clinical mentor for the prestigious Hornbrook
Group, which teaches dentists from around the world to do world-class
cosmetic dentistry. This is honor bestowed upon a select few dentists possessing
this expertise.
Dr. Arnold married Sarah in 1998, and they have two beautiful
daughters, Julia and Sophia. Additionally, they have
been blessed with two wonderful sons, Ethan and Matthew. Julia
was born in 2001, Sophia joined their family in 2002, Ethan
was born in 2005, and Matthew arrived in 2006. Dr.
Arnold enjoys spending time with his growing family, traveling,
reading and participating in all types of sports. The Arnold
family attends the First United Methodist Church in Valparaiso,
and Dr. Arnold is a member of the Mensa Society.

Dr. Lisa S. Shideler

Dr. Lisa Shideler

Dr. Lisa Shideler is the third generation of the Shideler family to be born and raised in Valparaiso. She grew up helping out and observing in her father's dental practice. After graduating from Valparaiso High School in 1983, Dr. Lisa went to Dental Hygiene school in Indianapolis. She earned her hygiene degree in 1986, but decided to go back to school to become a dentist.
While in dental school, Dr. Lisa won several awards for excellence in Periodontics and Prosthodontics. She also served as a clinical instructor for the Dental Hygiene program. Upon graduation in 1991, Dr. Lisa became the EIGHTH dentist in her family! She worked in her father's practice with her brother for six years, and began her own practice in 1997.
Dr. Lisa has completed extensive training in advanced dental techniques since school. She has attended courses given by the leaders in dentistry, such as Dr. Bill Strupp, Dr. Peter Dawson, Dr. Buddy Mopper, Dr. Corky Wilhite, Dr. Bob Nixon, and Dr. Gordon Christensen. These dental "icons" have been highly respected innovators for several decades, and Dr. Lisa attributes much of her succcess to their thoughtful guidance.
She has served on the Northwest Indiana Dental Peer Review Committee with Dr. Arnold for three years and participates in the Dental Study Club of Northwest Indiana. Dr. Lisa maintains membership in the American Dental Association and its local components, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Chicago Dental Society, and the American Association of Women Dentists. She is a former member of Tri Kappa and the Board of the American Cancer Society's Porter County unit. Dr. Lisa is a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies include tennis, golf, hiking, and travel.
In 2005, Dr. Lisa merged her practice with the practice of Dr. Jim Arnold. Both doctors had been extremely busy for several years and needed some help to maintain high standards or care and service to their patients. Dr. Natalie Wargo joined their team to relieve some of the workload and to ensure that patients would continue to be seen in a timely manner. It has been an excellent transition for all!

Dr. Arnold Welcomes Dr. Wargo to the Team
Dr. Natalie Wargo an outstanding dentist who has been a member of our
dental family since 2005. Dr. Wargo practiced dentistry in Crown Point
for two years and is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy
of General Dentistry, and the Northwest Indiana Dental Society. She
serves as a Board member for the Northwest Indiana Dental Society and is
a member of the Dental Study Club of Northwest Indiana. She enjoys
and excels in all aspects of general dentistry, and her excellent clinical
skills, coupled with her soothing demeanor and gentle nature, is a tremendous
asset to the team. Patients love Dr. Wargo because she excels at
gentle dentistry.
Dr. Wargo was raised in Hebron and attended Boone Grove High School. After
graduating in 1995, she continued her education at Purdue University
where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1999.
Dr.Wargo attended Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis,
graduating in 2003. After dental school, she returned to Northwest Indiana
and married (her high school sweetheart) Jason. Together, they enjoy playing
softball and volleyball through the park department and spending time with
their two dogs. In 2007 they were blessed with the birth of their
first child, Ian.
